Im M\u00e4rz 2020 ist  Aileen San Pablo-Baviera im Alter von sechzig Jahren – nach einem Besuch in Frankreich – in ihrer Heimat an \u201eCorona\u201c gestorben; bei den Mitreisenden gab es offenbar noch weitere Todesf\u00e4lle. <\/p>\n

Als Aileen San Pablo studierte sie in den achtziger Jahren in der chinesischen Hauptstadt.<\/p>\n

Nach BA, MA und PhD an einer philippinischen Universit\u00e4t wurde sie dort Professorin und auch Dekanin. Im Lauf der neunziger Jahre besch\u00e4ftigte sie sich immer mehr mit den anderen s\u00fcdostasiatischen und s\u00fcdasiatischen L\u00e4ndern. Sie leitete ein \u201eAsian Centre\u201c und ver\u00f6ffentlichte viele Aufs\u00e4tze und Monographien (s.u.).<\/p>\n

Sie war verheiratet und hatte drei Kinder. <\/p>\n

Ich habe ihren Namen erst nach ihrem Tod zum ersten mal geh\u00f6rt. Aus den biographischen Angaben und Photographien ergibt sich allerdings, dass wir einmal gleichzeitig an der gleichen Universit\u00e4t studierten und im gleichen Studentenwohnheim wohnten.<\/p>\n

\u201eChina in the ’80s<\/p>\n

In 1981, the streets of Beijing were wide and tree-lined but nearly empty of cars, dust kicked up only by public buses, military trucks, Red Flag limousines for the \u201cgaojiganbu\u201d (high officials), throngs of black bicycles at rush hour, and the occasional horse- or mule-drawn carts. At the time it was impossible to miss the ubiquitous huge statues of a smiling, waving or stern-faced Mao standing in front of major edifices. People addressed each other as \u201ccomrade.\u201d<\/p>\n

China back then was still in the early stages of opening up and reform \u2013 starting with a household contract system intended to boost agricultural productivity (I wrote my Masteral thesis on this \u2026 \u201d<\/p>\n
